Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the right to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
